Based on a successful Broadway show, Vincente Minnelli’s first film as a director tells the story of Little Joe, a gambler given the chance to redeem his soul, which is being fought over by the Lord’s Angel and Lucifer Jr, who makes him rich with a lottery win, and tempts him with gold-digger Georgia Brown. Music is provided by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Lena Horne.

Little Joe is resurrected after his shooting over a gambling debt, and is given 6 months to redeem his soul. He tries to be a good husband to Petunia, but the Devil tempts him with gold-digger Georgia Brown.
