The Bride of Solomon – A Victorian Masterpiece in Croydon
2nd - 3rd May 2025 , 11:00am - 4:00pm - Riesco Gallery, Museum of Croydon

To celebrate the National Gallery’s Art Road Trip arriving in town over the early May Bank Holiday, the Museum of Croydon is proud to present The Bride by Abraham Solomon – a rarely displayed Victorian painting chosen by public vote.
First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, it was originally shown with the verse: ‘We may not know, While life endures, whose lot is joy, whose woe. Whose is the sunlight, whose shall be the shade’.
The painting was purchased by William Ford Stanley and displayed at Stanley Halls for many years before becoming part of the Museum of Croydon’s collection in 1992 – a powerful reminder of Croydon’s artistic heritage.
Alongside the exhibition you can enjoy free family-friendly activities, including crafts and interactive storytelling.
