Dance Festival Croydon 2023 showcases exciting contemporary dance in venues in Croydon. It follows earlier festivals in 2017 and 2019. The second event of the festival is at the Whitgift Centre in North End, Croydon.

Folk Remix are the main company performing their work Step Hop House at Whitgift Centre, which is a mix of Ceilidh and Hip Hop dance styles. They will do 2 shows – 11.30am amd 2pm. Each show ill be followed by a workshop where the audiences will get to participate with the company.

Folk dance encompasses a rich diversity of dance forms, having developed over centuries in various communities across the world. These traditions are alive and thriving as part of a living and evolving tradition, alongside many other forms of traditional dance present in the UK today. Local Croydon based dance companies – Garba Flow, Beeja, Puarnami Arts, Subrang Arts, Upahaar Dance, PonSita, Caribsa and Black Light will showcase traditional folk dance and its contemporary interpretations.

Folk Remix – Step Hop House

30 minute family show with Ceilidh Jam participation dance for the audience to join in. Folk Dance Remixed a groundbreaking company creating unique fusions between Folk and Hip Hop styles with live music. Led by Artistic Directors Kerry Fletcher and Natasha Khamjani, the company rediscover old traditions through contemporary forms.

Step Hop House
A fresh, quirky, colourful and magical collision of traditional and Hip Hop dance and music: high-energy, with a unique remix of Maypole, Clogging, Ceilidh, Street, House and Breakdance with a hint of African & Bollywood… to a live soundtrack of fiddle & beat boxing – this is Folk and Street Dance like you’ve never seen it before!

Garba Flow – Gujarati Folk Dance

A Garba and Gujarati Folk dance medley. Choreographed by Parle Patel, Vibs Parle and Dhru Patel.

Croydon Folk Ensemble – Folk Dance

These traditions are alive and thriving as part of a living and evolving tradition, alongside many other forms of traditional dance present in the UK today. Many have converged here in London including dance companies Garba Flow, Beeja, Puarnami Arts, Subrang Arts, PonSita, Caribsa and Black Light. This event is a showcase of both traditional folk dance and its contemporary interpretations, presented by community groups.
